The Alpine Convention is the first international agreement for the protection and the promotion of the sustainable development of a cross-border mountain region. It aims at defending the natural ecosystem of the Alps and at promoting the sustainable development of this area, while protecting the economic and the cultural interests of the population living in its member Countries.
The Alpine Convention is a step towards recognizing the Alps as a single space in a global context, that is a space with different interdependent elements - nature, economy and culture. The different features of this space create a unique identity which needs a supranational protection.
