The alpine heritage deserves to be protected and used harmoniously by humans. Sustainable development is possible only with the harmonization between ecological requirements and economic and social interests.
On the basis of these considerations, the Countries of the Alpine Area, who met in Berchtesgaden from the 9th to the 11th of October 1989, decided to draft the Convention for the protection of the Alps. This agreement was open to signature by the parties on the 7th of November 1991.
The framework Convention for the protection of the Alps determines the general and shared principles, in order to promote a global politics for the protection and the sustainable development of the Alps. Moreover, through Protocols the contracting Parts establish the particular aspects for the implementation of the Convention itself and of its general targets.
